Biomechanics: Carbon Plating in Footwear

Biomechanics research in the running community has increasingly focused on the role of footwear designed to optimize and advance athletic performance. In particular, carbon fiber plates (CFP) within the soles of running shoes have been introduced and tested throughout the last decade. Through our review, our objective was to analyze the effects of carbon plating in footwear on lower limb mechanics and offer future design considerations based on our understanding of the effects and potential benefits of shoes with CFP.

After extensive literature review, we proposed conceptual design shapes that utilize biomimicry and loading effects, and electrical components to help aid in lower limb fatigue, with the goal of allowing athletes to perform at their peak performance longer.
